Lei Day

May 1st is called May Day in the United States and is a celebration of spring. In Hawaii, they have a special event on May Day called Lei Day. It is an event at Kapiolani Park. You can view gorgeous Leis, learn how to make your own lei, eat tasty local food and enjoy listening live music.

The festival is from 9:30 to 5:30 and is free.

Last year we had a lot of fun looking at the leis and learning how to make our own lei bracelets. I really recommend that you join this year!

Spam Jam

Last night was the annual (once a year) Spam Jam festival in Waikiki. People from all over come to Waikiki to watch live performances and eat Spam.

Local restaurants had special Spam menus and you could buy Spam t-shirts, bags and other goods. There were even free samples of Teriyaki Spam.

My favorite things at the festival were the Tahitian dancer performance and the Hula Cake. The Hula Cake doesn't have any Spam in it, but it was delicious!

I hope you can all come to the Spam Jam festival next year.

People were overflowing onto the sidewalk.

Can I Get...

Yesterday we practiced our restaurant ordering at Cheescake Factory! The restaurant is always  crowded, but carry-out is very quick. The thing that took the longest time was deciding which cheesecake to choose.

Chocolate Coconut Cream
Last night we tried the Chocolate Coconut Cream cheesecake and the Godiva cheesecake.
They were both delicious and we enjoyed eating them on the third floor of the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center.
Godiva

Everyone has their own way or ordering. I like to say: "Can I get the pasta please?" Other people might say: "I'll have the spaghetti" or "I'd like the spaghetti."

Even a simple "Spaghetti please" is OK! In fact, I think that is the best way to order in a very noisy restaurant.

Why English is So Hard to Learn

Are you frustrated trying to learn English? You are not the only one. Many people have gotten very frustrated trying to learn how to pronounce all the English homonyms (words that sound the same). Can you read the poem below? Good luck, it is harder than it looks!

WHY ENGLISH IS SO HARD TO LEARN

We must polish the Polish furniture.
He could lead if he would get the lead out.
The farm was used to produce produce.
The dump was so full that it had to refuse more refuse.
The soldier decided to desert in the desert.
This was a good time to present the present.
A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.
I did not object to the object.
The insurance was invalid for the invalid.
The bandage was wound around the wound.
There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.
They were too close to the door to close it.
The buck does funny things when the does are present.
They sent a sewer down to stitch the tear in the sewer line.
To help with planting, the farmer taught his sow to sow.
The wind was too strong to wind the sail.
After a number of injections my jaw got number.
Upon seeing the tear in my clothes I shed a tear.
I had to subject the subject to a series of tests.
How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?
I read it once and will read it agen
I learned much from this learned treatise.
I was content to note the content of the message.
The Blessed Virgin blessed her. Blessed her richly.
It's a bit wicked to over-trim a short wicked candle.
If he will absent himself we mark him absent.
I incline toward bypassing the incline.

 How did you do?
